GUEST BATH PROGRESS: Bye-Bye Bows

It's been a while since I shared our progress but we have been busy. I know you guys are wondering what's going on with the Den but since all of the hard labor is finished it's moving slow....really slow. Stay tuned, I'll get to that.

We've now set our focus on the Guest Bathroom. The guest bath was Little Bo-Beeps dream bath and our nightmare. It had Pepto-Bismol pink curtains that accented the pink bows (yes, bows) of the wallpaper as well as the pink tile floor. For a little visual reminder...

 BEFORE

Yes, she was a beauty. She had to go.
While our plan is to eventually gut this bathroom and start all over again, we aren't quite ready to do that mentally or financially so our goal for now is to give her a little facelift while trying to keep it as inexpensive as possible.

Our first step was to rip down the wallpaper. Easy enough, right?

NOT!

It took one pull to realize this was not going to happen. The pink bows had obviously been planned from the build because the wallpaper had been applied directly to the sheetrock without any prep or primer having been done to the sheet rock first. This is what we were left with...

That stuff wasn't going anywhere without pulling down the sheetrock too. And, that just wasn't in the plan or the budget so we had to come up with someother solution.

So, Travis patched the jagged area as well as all the cracks between the sheets around the room with sheetrock mud and then sanded it smooth so that we could paint right over the wallpaper. Then he painted the ceiling and prepped for painting.

We painted the trim a creamy white to match the tile around the walls...which we thank the remodel gods everyday for them not being the same pink that was so popular throughout the rest of the room.

We chose a light gray for the walls. Since the pink tile floors have to stay put for a while, we had to choose something to compliment them as much as any color can compliment Pepto pink.

We choose to paint the cabinet a dark gray in the same color family and change out its hardware.
And we had two very special little helpers.

With that, we were left with newly painted walls, crisp clean white trim, and...ugly yellowed pink marbled counter tops.

Not ok.
But too replace it would have been out of the question monetarily.
So, we decided to paint it.

This step isn't finished yet.
We've got the first coat of paint on but it's going to take two coats as well as a clear top coat.
While that's in the works, I've been shopping around for curtains and window treatment options. The pepto pink tile floors are still wounding my excitement about decorating this room, but I'm trying to remind myself that it's only temporary.

That brings me to the Den.
There has been some deviations from the original plan.
Shocker, I know.

This is where we stand right now.

As you see, I did not go with the rug I had originally picked out.
I loved that rug. I loved the color. I loved the trellis pattern.
I did not love the way it felt under foot. It was rough, scratchy, and not even remotely plush.
I did not love the price.

Right before I had made my mind to order the original rug, I stumbled across this rug.

It was totally not the direction I thought I wanted to go with the rug. It's very traditional.
But it was on sale and the colors were perfect for the room.
Sale + great colors = Done.

You'll also notice that the coffee table is not the brickmaker's table I wanted.
This coffee table is a craigslist special. And it is hopefully temporary.
The brickmaker's coffee table is not cheap. It's actually very expensive.
So, it's going to have to wait.
Until then, I really like this guy. It's simple. And the glass really opens up the space.
I thought I would paint it an oil-rubbed bronze but once I get it in the room with the rug, I kind of liked the antiqued gold finish. I'll live with it for a while.

Our chairs have been ordered and at this point I guess you'll be surprised to learn that they are the chairs that we initially picked out. They should be in at the end of May.

I've been shopping art, curtains, and pillows but I'll probably wait for the chairs to do much else in there.

Travis constantly works on the yard. He's actually out in the front yard limbing trees as I write this.

Also, a few weekends ago, Dean came over with the tractor and did some serious work to the brush on the left side of the house. It looks so much better over there with just a little section cleared. Thanks so much, Dean!!!

Our next project is going to be the garage. Right now it's painted an aweful mint green color that seems to have been a favorite shade when the house was built. It's also home to a colony of dirt-dobbers and other random insects. We are going to get it cleaned up and painted before the summer heat is upon us.

Til next time!!
